What are Long Tail Keywords?

Everyday, millions of people across the world are searching the web. Some are looking for general information. Others are looking for very specific services or products that they are willing to purchase. All of these people use keywords and keyword phrases to make it possible for the search engines to show them the pages that are most relevant to their needs. Long tail keywords are these three or four word phrases that people type into search engines when they are looking for very specific information and/or products.

Long tail keywords are very important from an SEO point of view. This is because people who are prepared to make a purchase use these phrases to guide them to a site that offers the product they are seeking. It is therefore, important to optimise pages to the specific keyword phrases that people are searching. This is likely to mean adding additional pages to a website, but this is also advantageous with the search engines.

Optimising sites for long tail keywords is a sure bet to reach leads that are motivated to buy when they get to the site. These keyword phrases are also easier to get to the top of search engine results than more generalised keywords. For example, a website that offers discounts on cruise vacations could attempt to optimise for the keyword travel. However, people using this keyword to search could be looking for airline tickets and schedules, hotel reservations, national parks, or any of a number of other travel related topics.

It is much less likely that a person searching for the keyword travel, will ever see this site with huge established sites such as Yahoo travel, Travelocity, and others dominating this search. However, optimising the site or a page on the site to the phrase discounted cruise tickets makes it more likely that this site can reach the top ten results for that keyword phrase. In addition, all of the people who use this phrase as their search term are looking specifically for cruise tickets, the item being offered by the site. The likelihood of making a sale from this search rises dramatically.

One aspect of long tail keywords that must be monitored carefully, however, is that keyword phrases can become so precise that the likelihood of an individual typing that exact phrase into a search engine drops to almost nil. It does a business no good whatsoever to optimise pages to keywords that will rarely, if ever, be used to search for an item. Rising to the top of those search results means little to nothing for the website.

On the other hand, the proper use of long tail keywords, and the optimisation of pages to phrases that consumers are likely to use when performing an internet search, can help a business grow exponentially in a short time. This is because these special phrases bring motivated, highly targeted leads to a website who are already prepared to buy as opposed to those who are searching for general information to help them make a decision to purchase.
